Risk assessment

This sample, sold as cocaine, contained a small amount of cocaine and almost exclusively procaine.

Procaine is a local anesthetic that is rarely used in medicine. Even when applied externally, it has an inhibitory effect on nerves and thus relieves pain. Procaine is regularly analyzed as an extender in cocaine samples. This is often a small proportion which can be disregarded.

Compared to cocaine, procaine has little to no psychoactive effect. However, even nasal consumption at a similar dosage can have unwanted negative effects on the cardiovascular system (including cardiac arrhythmia). There is a risk of taking a high dose of procaine if the expected cocaine-typical effect does not occur.

Intravenous consumption of procaine harbors an additional, high risk potential. It can lead to paralysis of the central nervous system and delay/blockade of the cardiac conduction system between the atria and ventricles. Unwanted side effects can include numbness, cardiac arrhythmia, a drop in blood pressure and allergic reactions.

Consumption is not recommended!

In the case of powders and crystalline samples, false declarations occur time and again; it is therefore also essential to have these tested before consumption!

Analysis

Have your substances tested in a Drug Checking

Testing

If you do not have the possibility to have substances analysed, always test a small amount to avoid overdoses.

Wait and see

Wait 2 hours after oral intake, as there are always powders / crystals in circulation with unexpected active ingredients, which can have a later onset of action.

Utensils

Always use your own sniffing utensils when applying powders nasally (sniffing) to avoid infecting yourself or others with diseases.
