Risk assessment

This liquid sold as codeine does not contain codeine, but morphine

Morphine is the strongest naturally occurring painkiller from the opiate group and is obtained from the milky sap of the opium poppy. Morphine has a strong analgesic effect, relieves coughing and has psychotropic properties. It is used to treat severe pain in emergency and palliative medicine. However, due to its dampening and calming effect, the active ingredient is also misused as a euphoric narcotic.

As codeine (20 - 200mg orally) is dosed much higher than morphine (5 - 25mg orally), a misdeclaration such as this is potentially life-threatening, as morphine without tolerance has a strong respiratory depressant effect (worsens breathing) even at low doses, which can lead to respiratory arrest and coma. Even at lower doses, side effects such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, sweating, skin rashes, itching, dizziness, headaches and fatigue can occur.

On a psychological level, confusion, nightmares and hallucinations may occur. Rather rarely, blood pressure drops, breathing difficulties and allergic reactions may occur; nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, lack of appetite, abdominal pain, sweating, skin rashes, itching, dizziness, headaches and tiredness are other common symptoms. On a psychological level, confusion, nightmares and hallucinations can occur.

Substances purchased on the illegal market must be tested and, if drug checking is not available, a lower dosage should be tested first.

Safer Use

Analysis

Have your substance tested in a drug check if you bought it on the black market or on the internet. Counterfeit blisters may look identical to the original packaging.

Mixed use

Do not mix any depressant substances such as benzodiazepines, alcohol, GHB/GBL or opioids. Risk of unconsciousness or respiratory paralysis!

Dosage

Feel your way to the dosage and do not rely on dosage information from friends. Various factors such as habituation or dependence can contribute to a greatly increased dosage!

Testing

If you do not have the possibility to have substances analyzed, first test a maximum of one third of the pill. Some counterfeit drugs contain a more potent substance than the original.

Wait and see

Wait at least 2 hours after taking the drug. With some drugs, the onset of the intoxicating effect is very slow or it is difficult to perceive.
